The Buccaneeers’ varsity baseball team split a pair of games at Grand Rapids Christian on Saturday.
Hayden Modaff and Tanner Jonas each drove in a pair of runs in a 10-3 win over Sparta in the opener. Later, Grand Rapids Christian exploded for 13 hits in a 15-6 victory over the Bucs.
John Wickey earned the win against Sparta as he allowed six hits and three runs over five innings. He struck out two and walked three.
Jared Kelly came in and shut down Sparta over the final two innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
Chad Mattson scored three runs for the Bucs, while Ty VanWieren and Aaron Shumaker each scored twice.
Modaff, Shumaker and Jonas each had two hits. Shumaker and Kelly added RBIs for the Bucs.
Against Grand Rapids Christian, Adam Carlisle got the start and lasted just two innings, allowing eight earned runs. Jacob Miller took over in the third and was also hit hard as he surrendered five runs over three innings.
Nate Bonter closed out the game, allowing a pair of runs.
Bonter, VanWieren and Mattson each had two hits for the Bucs. Jeff Stevens had a two-run base hit, while Mattson scored twice and drove in a run.
Connor Grimes and VanWieren also had RBIs for the Bucs.
TROJANS TAKE 2 FROM VIKINGS
Fruitport hosted Tri-County in a Lakes Eight Conference makeup doubleheader on Saturday, with the host Trojans winning a pair of tight games.
In the opener, Fruitport survived a late rally to secure an 8-7 win.
Mitchell Reyes and Jacob Breese had two hits each for the Trojans, while Travis Grimm earned the win and Mitch Ferguson pitched up the save.
In Game 2, Fruitport jumped out to a 4-1 lead, only to see Tri-County battle back to tie the game in the third.
The Trojans then pushed the winning run across in the sixth on an RBI double by Travis Grim.
Grimm, Lakatos and Breese each had two hits while Austin Curtis earned the win, going seven innings and striking out a pair.
The Trojans, now 11-6 on the year, improved to 7-3 in conference games.
