Matthew Mulcahy and Abby Cole were named the Steve Sluka Award winners during the school’s senior athletic awards banquet on Thursday.
The pair of racked up impressive lists of accomplishments over the past several years.
Cole was an all-state performer on both the basketball and the volleyball court. She led the Buccaneers’ girls basketball team to back-to-back Class A state titles as a junior and senior, and guided the Bucs’ volleyball team to the Class A state semifinals her senior year.
Cole was a finalist for both the Miss Basketball and Miss Volleyball awards, and was named to countless all-state teams in both sports.
Cole also played tennis at Grand Haven.
Mulcahy was a standout on the football field, the wrestling mat and the lacrosse field for the Bucs.
He worked his way into the starting linup on coach Mike Farley’s varsity football team as a sophomore, and was a steadying force on the Bucs’ offensive line the past three years.
On the wrestling mat, Mulcahy reached the state meet both his junior and senior years while winning conference and regional titles along the way. As a junior, Mulcahy helped guide the Bucs to the state finals for the first time in school history.
Mulcahy his currently starring for Grand Haven’s varsity boys lacrosse team, which hosts a regional game tonight at Buccaneer Stadium.
