A pair of goals by freshman Alexys Riksen propelled the Western Michigan Christian girls soccer team to a 3-0 win over rival Muskegon Catholic Central on Thursday.

The victory came in the semifinal round of the Division 4 district tournament. With the win, the Lakers will meet North Muskegon in Saturday’s district championship game at 11 a.m. That game will be played at Warrior Field.

North Muskegon beat Kent City Algoma Christian on Thursday, 4-0.

Jessica Kinnucan also scored for the Warriors, while Mykayla Denison, Alli Langeland and Sarah Hughes each had an assist.

WMC (14-4-3) dominated in shots on goal with a 15-7 advantage.

“This was a great game for us where everything came together,” WMC coach David Hulings. “Whenever we play Catholic they seem to take us right out of our game. Tonight we stayed disciplined, kept to the game plan and we had some success with it. We were able to try some new things that worked and that doesn't always happen.

“Jessica Kinnucan played in the middle tonight and simply won so many balls for us. She seemrf to stop each attack they had. Our three seniors and two sophomores in the back did the job at keeping the ball out of the net and making anything Catholic did, difficult.

“We look forward to Saturday's game. I think we are peaking at the right time and learning to play with each other and for each other.”
