After turning in a tremendous season on the court this spring, the Spring Lake varsity girls tennis team is now reaping the rewards.
First-year head coach Cathy Layson was named the Regional Coach of the Year from the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association for Regional No. 24. Layson led the Lakers to a 9-1 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in the Coastal Conference. The team also captured the program’s first regional title since the mid-1980s.
Layson will also coach Spring Lake’s boys in the fall, taking over for longtime coach Charlie Bassett.
Spring Lake also had three players earn all-state honors. No. 1 singles standout Lenka Pousova, an exchange student from Slovakia, earned the honor after completing a perfect record in league matches and going undefeated at the regional.
The No. 1 doubles team of Faith Lee and Madison Khem also earned first- team honors. The duo were Coastal Conference champions and earned runner-up honors at the regional meet. Lee is the third member of her family to earn all-state honors, joining older brothers Jake and Nate Lee.
Spring Lake finished tied for 10th at the Division 3 state finals in Holland on May 31 to June 1.
