Fruitport's Wierengo, Erny named top senior athletes

Justin Wierengo and Jessica Erny were recently named Fruitport’s male and female senior athletes of the year.

The honor is selected by Fruitport’s high school coaching and teaching staff. Recipients must be a multi-sport athlete, hold a 3.4 or higher grade point average, and has exemplified leadership, sportsmanship, and athletic and academic talent.

Wierengo features a 3.6 GPA and played basketball and baseball throughout his high school career.

Erny, who also sports a 3.6 GPA, earned eight varsity letters and played basketball, soccer and as a freshmen, played boys varsity tennis. She played the sport in the fall because playing girls tennis in the spring would conflict with soccer.

Other senior athlete awards included:

Showcase Award Winners (Student athletes who will represent Fruitport with pride and excellence): Wierengo and Brandi Jones

MHSAA Scholarship  (For achieving both academic and athletic excellence): Jessica Meloche

Detroit Free Press Male Athlete of the Year (Recognized for the qualities of uncommon perseverance and outstanding achievement): Morgan Glover and Cody Pekel

US Army Reserve Athletes of the Year (Athlete who has excelled in their sport while maintaining their academic priorities): Brianna Pekel and Jacob Breese

US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award (Exemplary citizen who has exhibited personal traits of courage, poise and self-confidence as a varsity athletes): Amanda Benson and Alan Pekel

Muskegon Hall of Fame Student Athletes of the Year for Fruitport (Recognized for multiple sports contributions and high level of achievements): Debbie Pekel and Tyler Fehler

Fruitport also recognized nine athletes with Athletic Foundation Outstanding Achievement awards, which are presented to those who have earned six or more varsity letters during their high school career. They are Amanda Benson, Jacob Breese, Jessica Erny, Tyler Fehler, Amilio Flores, Kate Gawlik, Alan Pekel, Brianna Pekel, and Debbie Pekel.
