Avanti takes top spot in 8+8 Cruising Rally

The Grand River Sailing Club hosted its 26th annual 8+8 Cruising Rally on Saturday.

The event sends boats approximately eight nautical miles offshore, around a course marker, and back to the Grand Have piers.

Duane Schroeder’s Avanti took first place in the event with a corrected time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 59 seconds.

Mac and Stacie McClellan’s JetStar took second at 2:09.20, followed by Rod and Jo Schmidt’s Rebecca, which was third in 2:11.41.

A total of 14 boats took part in the popular event.

Last week Wednesday, the GRSC wrapped up its first four-race regatta of the season, the Spring Lake Travel Leaders Cup.

Denny Dryer’s Frank Lloyd Starboard and Tom Morell’s Surface Tension tied for first place in the Spinnaker Fleet with a total of 10 points each.

Third was Dick Seyffert’s Heart Throb with 13 points.

In the Main & Jib Fleet, Jack Kelley’s CC Rider ran away with first-place honors with five points. Ross Carter’s Far Niente was second with 11 points, and John Campbell’s Peggy Dash II placed third with 14 points.
