The Hurley Rip My Shred Stick tour will visit Grand Haven’s City Beach today.

The event is a free surfing competition open to kids ages 16 and under, with participants showing off their moves on the surf boards.

The program, which is held in conjunction with Grand Haven business MACkite, also gives children the opportunity to test out Hurley’s new boards and meet and surf with Hurley’s professional surf team.

“The pros will get out on the water push, the surf boards, they make it fun for the kids,” said MACkite’s Lynn Negen. “They give away great prizes. We’re down there from 8 to noon, and you want to get there early because kick it off right away.

“Then we come back here and have pizza and the pros hang with the kids. They do this Coast to Coast, and the second year they did it, we were their second largest event.”

Around 50 kids participated in last year’s event.

Parents need to sign a waiver for their kids before the children can participate.

Grand Haven is the only Midwest stop for the tour, which started with a four-stop West Coast swing before visiting Puerto Rico.

An East Coast swing included stops in Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Rip My Shred Stick heads to Costa Rica on July 20.
