A trio of college students from West Michigan will attempt to paddleboard across Lake Michigan.

Craig Masselink, his brother Trent Masselink, and friend Ginny Melby are leaving Milwaukee on Sunday. Their plan is to paddle directly across Lake Michigan, finishing in Muskegon around 30 hours after departing. The trip will cover approximately 80 miles.

“The three of us are going to rotate as paddlers, so one of us will be paddling while the other two are in the support boat tracking our position to make sure we are on course, and checking weather to make sure there aren’t any threatening storms in the area,” Craig Masselink said.

The purpose of the trip is to raise money for Restore International, a non-profit ministry that fights against injustice in Uganda and combats human rights violations such as child slavery, forced prostitution and slave labor.”

The group is sponsored by Coast Surf Shop of St. Joseph, which donated gear for the trip.

“Needless to say, paddleboarding across Lake Michigan is an extreme challenge,” Craig Masselink said.

More information can be found on the group’s Facebook page, “Paddleboarding Across Lake Michigan.”
