HED: NOYSA All-Stars win regional opener

INDIANAPOLIS — The North Ottawa Youth Softball Association U12 All-Stars opened their Little League regional tournament with a 10-3 win over a team from Illinois on Sunday.

NOYSA broke open a close game with an eight-run fourth inning.

Leah Vaughan picked up the win in the pitchers’ circle, going 4 2/3 innings and striking out 12. She allowed just three hits and three earned runs. She walked four batters and earned the win.

Madelyn Nelson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out one.

Nelson paced the NOYSA All-Stars with three hits and scored two runs. Lauren Hellman added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Molly Poole and Kileah Rymal also had two RBIs.

Both Hellman and Rymal banged out doubles for the NOYSA squad.

Illinois jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The NOYSA All-Stars battled back in the bottom of the third as Lindsey Paggeot’s base hit scored Nelson.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hellman reached on a single, then Poole reached on an error and eventually came around to score.

Ashlyn Hall drew a walk, then Kelly Olthof was hit by a pitch.

Rymals double scored two runs to make it 4-2 NOYSA.

Rymal eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, then Paggeot, Vaughan and Taylor Dew drew back-to-back-to-back walks.

Hellmen then blasted a double that scored two runs, then Poole singled to score Drew and Hellman.

That

Big inning was all the cushion the NOYSA pitchers needed as they allowed just one run over the final three innings.

The NOYSA All-Stars advance to face Webb City Girls Softball (Missouri) on Monday at 5:30 p.m.  On Tuesday, they’ll face Riverfield (Indiana) at 1:30 p.m. On Wednesday, they’ll take on Appleton Einstein (Wisconsin) at 7 p.m.
