In its first action of the season, Spring Lake’s varsity volleyball team turned in a sparkling performance to win the Reeths-Puffer Invitational on Saturday.
The Lakers went 11-1 on the day, with a victory over Lakes Eight Conference rival Fremont in the championship match.
“This is a great start for the Lakers,” coach Sarah Bulthuis said. “We had a lot of different players contribute in many different ways.”
Kelsee Zuidema was unstoppable at the net for Spring Lake as she slammed down 52 kills. Courtney Kyser and Lydia Suchecki each added 37 kills.
Rachel Pennington led the team with 28 digs, followed by Maya Denslow with 26 and Zuidema and Breanna Williams, both with 23.
Setter Karley Engelsman had a fantastic day, finishing with 121 assists.
“I was pleased with my setter mixing up the offense and using many different hitters,” Bulthuis said. “This contributed to the success of the day. I also thought our defense, with blocking and digging, helped to keep us in long rallies.”
Kyser added 13 aces and Williams had 11 aces for Spring Lake.
