The Spring Lake boys tennis team finished tied for second at the East Kentwood Invitational this weekend.
Grand Rapids Christian shared the spot with the Lakers, right behind first-place finisher Forest Hills Central.
Spring Lake’s finish was spear-headed by the top of their order.
At No. 1 singles, Ryan Fedewa split his first two sets with Forest Hills Central’s Evan Taylor, 4-6, 6-3, forcing a third set tie-breaker, which Taylor won 10-8. Taylor went on to win the championship against Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
At No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles the Lakers made it to the championship, before having their title aspirations dashed by Forest Hills Central.
Stuart Velarde lost 6-3, 6-2, while Craig Pratt and Griffin Wagasky fell 6-1, 6-0.
Substitute Bricker Reed pulled off a big victory for the Lakers at No. 3 singles. His 10-8 victory in the tie-breaking third set against Grand Rapids Catholic Central moved the Lakers into their second-place tie with Grand Rapids Christian.
The Lakers second-place finish comes after wining the boys tennis invitational at Allegan on Thursday.
Spring Lake won seven of the invitational’s eight flights, their 18 points double that of second-place finisher Allegan.
None of the seven lost a set on the day.
The Lakers champions were Ryan Fedewa (No. 1 singles), Stuart Velarde (No. 2), Trevor Zenas (No. 3), Kasey Panyard (No. 4), Harrison Palmer and Mitch Davis (No. 1 doubles), Josh Cole and Brenden Peel (No. 2) and Craig Pratt and Griffin Wagasky (No. 3).
