Spring Lake’s swimmers and divers scored a convincing 118-67 win over Mona Shores on Thursday.

The Lakers’ medley relay team of Megan Peel, Jen Meulenbelt, Sophie Conroy and Ellen Hyde turned in a state qualifying time of 1 minute, 59.45 seconds.

Meulenbelt also hit a state cut time in the 200 individual medley at 2:25.07.

Peel qualified for the state meet in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.95.

The Lakers also received outstanding swims from Mairead Cooper and Annie Brechting in the 100 butterfly; Audrey Gleason  and Carly Komar in the 100 freestyle; Paige Bruns and Becca Tober in the 500 freestyle; and Ana West in the 100 breaststroke.

“What a difference a couple days makes,” Lakers’ coach Penny Zacek said. “We looked like two different teams from Tuesday’s meet against Holland Christian to tonight’s first home meet. I am very proud of every girl on this team. They learned tonight that it is the seconds, third and fourth place finishes that really help win meets.

“We had a couple very good come-from-behind finishes which, from a coaching standpoint, is great to see. We still have a lot of work ahead. Next week we will compete against a very tough co-op school of Byron Center, (Grand Rapids) South Christian and Caledonia.”

That meet will take place Thursday at the Spring Lake Aquatics Center.

BUCS’ GOLFERS THIRD AT TRI-MEET

Grand Haven shot a 201 to place third at an O-K Red Conference tri-meet on Thursday at Macatawa Legends Golf Course in Holland.

Martha Ramsey shot a 45 for the Bucs. Anna Gagnon added a 50, while Meghan Hendrickson carded a 51 and Kaile DeVries shot a 55.

“I’m a little disappointed in our score,” Bucs’ coach Roger Glass said. “I thought we could have taken that match, but we’ll get back at it.”

TROJANS’ TENNIS FALLS TO TIGERS

Fruitport’s varsity tennis team suffered a 7-1 loss to Grant on Wednesday.

The Trojans’ lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Alex scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
