The 20th annual Sportsmen for Youth day will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Muskegon Fairgrounds.
“As we all know, kids are our greatest and most important resource,” event organizers said in a release. “While most of them may be able to program an entire computer faster than we could read this note, many more have never had the opportunity to experience much of what the great outdoors has to offer.”
Each year, member organizations and volunteers team up to offer an outdoor extravaganza where kids of all ages are able to experience the outdoors and its many opportunities.
The free event includes activities, demonstrations and information from exhibitors. Prize drawings, lunch and a memento are provided for all kids ages 17 and younger.
The day typically draws more than 2,500 youngsters and 1,000 adults.
A popular exhibit each year put on by the Michigan Anglers features and above-ground pond featuring 1,000 live rout, allowing each child the opportunity to catch a fish.
Conservation clubs, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and local 4H groups bring in live animals, allowing kids to touch animals ranging in size from a gardener snake to a horse.
Safari Club International’s Sensory Safari trailer exhibits animal mounts from around the world, giving youngsters the chance to experience the bristles of a warthog and the soft pelt of a mink.
The Muskegon Fairgrounds are located at 6621 Heights Ravenna Rd. in Fruitport.
