HED: Haven JV football falls to Lowell
The Buccaneers’ junior varsity football team suffered a 62-20 loss to Lowell on Thursday.
Grand Haven fell behind early, but kept on fighting. Ross Koella’s interception was returned to the 2-yard line, setting up Levi Overway’s touchdown run. On the Red Arrows’ next possession, Kane Wilkinson picked off a pass and returned it for a score.
Drew Buursema and Joey Zelenka both ran hard in the second half, and Overway scored his second touchdown on a 21-yard run.
Defensively, Reis Lannin, Matt VanHeeat and Koella stood out, as did Zach McKinnon, Destin Meirs, Evan Kauffman and Jeremy VanDyke.
In the freshmen contest, Grand Haven scored a key road win at Lowell, 14-12.
Caleb Braley and Jack Costello scored rushing touchdowns for the Bucs, while Brady Jonas was 2-for-2 on point-after kicks. The offensive line played outstanding for Grand Haven (2-1).
TROJANS TOP LAKERS
Fruitport’s junior varsity team scored a 26-8 victory over Spring Lake on Thursday.
The Trojans’ offense was able to eat up big chunks of yardage through the air as Jarrod Wierengo and Seth Glover both hauled in touchdown passes.
Defensively, the Trojans’ Cody Rabach made several tackles for loss, while linebackers Levi Six and Glover were outstanding for Fruitport (2-1).
