Both Spring Lake and Fruitport scored Lakes Eight Conference soccer victories on Tuesday, setting the stage for Thursday’s clash between the two teams at Spring Lake.
The Trojans currently sit atop the league standings with a 5-0 mark, while the Lakers are close behind at 4-0-1. The winner of Thursday’s game will almost certainly claim the regular-season league title and the top seed for the postseason tournament.
Both squads needed overtime to remain undefeated in conference play on Tuesday.
Spring Lake edged host Grant, 4-3, in a wild game that saw three goals scored in overtime.
The Lakers led 2-0 on back-to-back goals by Josh Roberge, but the Tigers battled back to tie the game on a penalty kick with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Grant then scored in the opening moments of the first of two 10-minute overtimes.
Spring Lake rallied in the second extra session. First, Keegan George scored when he took a cross and pounded the ball into the net.
Less than a minute later, freshman Dylan Constantine scored his first varsity goal, which proved to be the game-winner.
Fruitport also had to play catch-up as the Trojans fell behind Orchard View, 1-0.
The Trojans tied the game as Andrew Frost sent a cross to Noah Hendricks, who drilled a header into the net for a 1-1 tie.
In overtime, the Trojans’ Zach Gilson scored twice. The first was on a breakaway off a pass from Nick Carrier; the second came on a header off a cross from Bryant Rebone.
“We showed our great resilience and tenacity again today,” Fruitport coach Greg Kobylak said. “We know we have an explosive attack and can score goals in bunches. Orchard View played a great defensive game with their organization and effort. Their goalkeeper was amazing, making 22 saves.”
BUCS FALL TO BULLDOGS
Grand Haven suffered a 2-1 loss to host Grandville on Tuesday.
The Buccaneers scored early in the second half as Jamal Yarbrough hit a shot that clanged in off the crossbar. Isaac Braak assisted on the goal.
Grandville, however, scored a pair of late goals to steal the victory.
