The Spring Lake equestrian team captured the District 9 Division B championship last weekend at the Mason County Fair Grounds in Ludington.
The team features seniors Caroline Redick and Taylor Sandberg; juniors Brooke Whipple and Mary Doornbos; and freshman Kathryn Bruno. Sandy Doom serves as the head coach. She is assisted by Joan Meekhof, Rachel Rant and Kate VanNess.
The Lakers took the No. 1 spot with 541 points, which was enough to hold off rival Fruitport. The Trojans were the reserve champions with a total of 476 points.
Also competing in Division B were Fremont, Shelby and Hart.
The Lakers rode in a variety of classes, includeing Western, Saddleseat, Huntseat, Bareback, Speed and Showmanship.
"The girls have really worked hard for this,” Doom said. “Despite one of the girls being sick during the week and the demands of keeping up with their schoolwork, they put forth a tremendous amount of effort make sure they got out and practiced, and to be as well prepared as they could possibly be. And it paid off!"
Spring Lake and Fruitport move on to regional competition in Ludington this weekend.
If they are victorious at regionals, they will then next travel to Midland County Fair Grounds on Oct. 10-13 to compete for the title of state championship.
