HED: Trojans’ soccer shuts out Warriors
Knowing that Western Michigan Christian was more than capable of mounting a dangerous attack, Fruitport soccer coach Greg Kobylak stressed defense to his team on Monday.
The Trojans listened.
Fruiptort shut out visiting WMC, 3-0, for an impressive non-conference victory.
“Conner Deenen made three official saves, but he came off his line numerous times in crutial situations to stop the attacks,” Kobylak said of his goalie. “Ben Kramer, Jacob Dyer, Nathan Sturtevant and Cameron Brandow were fast and strong in defense. Matt Umstead really set the tone in the middle with his energy to win free balls.”
The Trojans were also efficient on the offensive end, thanks to leading scorer Zach Gilson.
Gilson scored just five minutes into the game off an assist from Andrew Frost and hit a shot inside the near post to give the Trojans a quick 1-0 lead.
Gilson and Noah Hendricks scored second-half goals for Fruitport.
LAKERS TOP KNIGHTS
Spring Lake scored a 2-0 victory over Kenowa Hills on Monday.
The two teams were tied at 0-0 at halftime, but the Lakers’ Nic Ellingboe came up big in the second half, scoring both of his team’s goals.
