With plenty of emotion swirling around the Spring Lake Aquatics Center, the Lakers’ swimming and diving team fought past visiting Wayland on Tuesday, 96-82.
“Tonight was parent's night, where the seniors and their parents are highlighted,” coach Penny Zacek said. “The team always wants to do well for their seniors so they swam and dove very well tonight.”
Freshman Jennifer Meulenbelt smashed the school record in the 200-yard medley relay. Her time of 2 minutes, 17.71 seconds was more than three seconds faster than the previous record.
Other top performances were turned in by Mairead Cooper (100 butterfly), Jo Ruter (500 freestyle), Kayce Goll and Lorenne Gilbert (50 freestyle), Sophia Kleinhecksel (100 backstroke), Allyson Curtis (500 freestyle), and Hannah Jones (100 breaststroke).
Paige Rubleski won the diving competition with 197.25 points, followed by teammate Makayla Boyink in second with 178.10.
Boyink had a fantastic showing at Saturday’s Holland Christian Invitational, placing fifth out of 22 divers with a score of 305.75.
Rubleski took 11th place with 260.85 points.
“It was great to see the girls finish so well since a lot of these divers will be at our regional meet, and our girls will have the confidence to be in the top 12 and make it to state this year,” coach Barb Brackett said. “The competition was tough, but our girls held their own.”
The Lakers face Unity Christian on Thursday.
GH SWIMMERS DEFEAT LUDINGTON
Grand Haven’s swimming and diving team scored an easy 121-59 victory over visiting Ludington on Tuesday.
“We had a chance to get kids in events they are not normally in,” said assistant coach Evan Carter. “Leah Chappell and Dali Woodard had great splits in the back portion of the medley relay. Tara Lunsford had a great swim in the 500, and Sohpie Kleyla and Abby Poort continue to be point scorers for us.”
New swimmers Sidnee Watkins, Sarah Jane Chrysler, Mya Heibel and Emily Markovicz had strong showings for the Bucs.
Carter noted that team captains Kate Armstrong, Adi Smith, Casey Murphy and Maggie Ginnocchio have stepped up in a leadership role.
“We had some fun swims tonight, letting them all face off against each other in the 100 breast,” Carter said.
