Gerrit Schaap’s goal four minutes in was all the offense Grand Haven’s varsity soccer team needed in a 1-0 victory over Rockford.
The game featured a pair of state-ranked teams in Division 1 as the No. 6-ranked Buccaneers avenged an earlier overtime loss to the No. 8 Rams.
Grand Haven’s goal came on a corner kick from Ian Yetzke. The ball came to Schaap, who was able to hit a solid shot that eluded the Rockford goalie.
“Throughout the game, we were able to keep up a good work rate and that created opportunities for us to carry play for parts of the game,” said Bucs’ coach Aaron Dean, whose team is now 10-3-5 overall. The Bucs are second in the O-K Red at 6-2-1. East Kentwood sits at 6-2 in league play, good for first place despite losing twice to Grand Haven.
Dean credited goalie Garrison Mast and defenders Nick Kline, Ken Kaufman, Zach Thomas and Joe Wisniewski with a solid effort in recording the shutout, and noted that Connor Dault also turned in a strong performance.
The Bucs wrap up their regular season on Wednesday at home against Grandville.
