Keegan George scored a hat trick, leading the Spring Lake varsity soccer team to a 4-1 win over Western Michigan Christian on Thursday in the final regular-season game for both teams.
The Lakers got on the scoreboard first when a long goal kick got past the Warriors’ defense. George ran on and drilled a shot into the net for the early advantage.
WMC answered 10 minutes later as Chaise Schuiteman scored on a scramble following a corner kick.
It looked like the game would enter halftime 1-1, but the Lakers managed a goal with 15 seconds remaining before intermission. A long throw-in went to George, who went up with a WMC defender and flicked a shot into the net for a 2-1 lead.
“Honestly, we were a little lucky to get into halftime ahead,” Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen said. “They played a little better than us. But we dominated the second half. Our defense played great.”
TROJANS CLOSE WITH WIN
Fruitport closed out its regular season with a 2-1 win over Hudsonville.
Zach Gilson scored the Trojan’s first-half goal unassisted.
Hudsonville tied the game midway through the second half, then Fruitport scored the game-winner with 6:43 remaining. That goal came from Andrew Frost, assisted by Bryant Rebone.
