After winning the Division C state title in equestrian last year, Grand Haven fell short of a repeat this weekend.
But the Buccaneers can still call themselves champions.
Grand Haven finished second in the competition at the Midland County Fairgrounds, making them reserve champions.
The Bucs second place finish is all the more impressive when you consider they only had one returner from last years’ championship squad — sophomore Olivia Ortiz.
Fellow riders Rya Greene, Lily Atkinson and Kyah Shumake are all freshmen.
“I was very proud of them,” said coach Jo Kosanic. “For as young as they are, they really kept it together.”
Greene placed fourth and seventh in hunt seat equitation. She also had a tenth place finish in western equitation, and a fifth and a ninth in bareback western equitation
