The Spring Lake girls cross country team took second at Saturday's Division 2 finals at Michigan International Speedway.
It was Spring Lake's second straight year taking silver, and gave the Lakers an incredible two-season streak of finishing in the top three of every one of their meets.
"We were talking when we got down there Friday night about getting back up to the stage — being a top two team again," coach Aaron Andres said. "It was just exciting to see them to be able to make that happen. Being able to accomplish any goal as an athlete is amazing, and being able to do this two years in a row was a fantastic."
Spring Lake (205) finished behind state champion Grand Rapids Christian (109) and just ahead of third-place Ostego (213).
From his vantage point Saturday, Andres thought the Lakers were going to finish third or fourth.
"It was a great surprise," Andres said of ending up in second."I knew the girls ran well, but it was very close. Half an hour after the race there were a lot of tense moments (waiting for the results)."
Sophomore Erin O’Keefe was the first runner to cross the finish line for the Lakers with a time of 19 minutes, 29.7 seconds. The mark was good for a 30th-place finish, and earned all-state honors for O’Keefe.
