The Spring Lake swimming and diving team has 10 members headed to this weekend’s Division 3 state championships at the Holland Aquatic Center, two weeks after clinching a share of the Coastal Conference Championship.
But earlier this season, coach Penny Zacek said it took some time to get reacquainted, after a few years away from the program.
“I’m having fun — I hope the girls are (too),” Zacek said after a September home meet against Byron Center. “It’s been an adjustment getting back, but it’s good. I’ve enjoyed it.
“There’s a little rust with 48 high school girls. But I do a little bit of coaching in the summer with our summer rec program, so it wasn’t total rust removal. But, oh yeah, getting back into the routine and designing workouts — it’s been a little bit of a challenge.”
Zacek left her position as the girls swimming coach following the 2010 season after her husband switched jobs and she thought she might have to move to the east side of the state. Zacek also wanted to make sure she could watch her son Nick swim at Grand Valley State.
