A happy return

Zacek coaches girls swim team for first time since ’10

You’d think it was smooth sailing based on the results.

The Spring Lake swimming and diving team has 10 members headed to this weekend’s Division 3 state championships at the Holland Aquatic Center, two weeks after clinching a share of the Coastal Conference Championship.

But earlier this season, coach Penny Zacek said it took some time to get reacquainted, after a few years away from the program.

“I’m having fun — I hope the girls are (too),” Zacek said after a September home meet against Byron Center.  “It’s been an adjustment getting back, but it’s good. I’ve enjoyed it.

“There’s a little rust with 48 high school girls. But I do a little bit of coaching in the summer with our summer rec program, so it wasn’t total rust removal. But, oh yeah, getting back into the routine and designing workouts — it’s been a little bit of a challenge.”

Zacek left her position as the girls swimming coach following the 2010 season after her husband switched jobs and she thought she might have to move to the east side of the state. Zacek also wanted to make sure she could watch her son Nick swim at Grand Valley State.

What a tremendous job by Coach Zacek this year. She took over a team that was mentally and physically broken after last season and turned them into Conference Champions. There were just under 50 girls on the team. That is a large group to coach, mentor, and mold. The Spring Lake Swimming/Diving Team is very fortunate to have her.

She is right up there with Jeremy Thelan (Boys Soccer) for best coaching job this fall season.

This has been an unbelievable fall sports season at Spring Lake. It will probably never be duplicated again.

Boys Soccer = State (2nd Place)
Boys Tennis = Conference Champs & State (5th Place)
Girls Cross-Country = Conference Champs & State (2nd Place)
Girls Golf = Conference Champs & State (3rd Place)
