Zeeland West hangs on for D3 state title win

There wasn’t much that rattled Zeeland West all season.

The resiliency of the Dux football team paid off in the Division 3 state title game at Ford Field. Zeeland West led from start to finish, but allowed DeWitt to pull within seven points in the final five minutes of the game.

A key roughing the kicker penalty on a Dux fourth down earned Zeeland West a first down with less than a minute remaining. The Dux too a knee to end the game, 34-27, and win the state championship at Ford Field on Saturday.

“It feels great — nothing better than this,” Grant Postma said, the team’s punter.

Zeeland West claimed its third state title since the school was established in 2005. The Dux won in 2006 and in 2011, both under coach John Shillito.
