It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.

Fruitport defeated Godwin Heights at home Monday night, 40-25.

The Trojans held on to a 6- to 9 - point advantage for most of the game, pulling away after the Fighting Wolverines were forced to pressure late in the fourth quarter.

Coach Bob German said he wished his squad would have put some more distance between them and Godwin Heights sooner in the game.

“We just didn’t finish tonight,” said German. “We had I don’t know how many opportunities early in the game to score easy buckets, and we just could not finish. We kind of just built up an early lead and kept it there.”

The first quarter set the tone for the ugly contest, with both teams utilizing full court presses.

The Trojans scored the quarter’s last two baskets to take a 12-7 lead heading into the second.
