The winter storm that has bombarded West Michigan with more than a foot of snow and wicked winds has claimed several more high school athletic events.
All of Friday’s prep contests for Grand Haven and Fruitport were canceled. However, today’s basketball extravaganza between Spring Lake and Western Michigan Christian at WMC is expected to go on as planned.
The Buccaneers’ big O-K Red Conference showdown at the Rockford Rams never materialized as athletic director Robin Bye announced the cancelation around 2 p.m. Friday.
Also snowed out was Grand Haven’s varsity hockey showdown at East Kentwood.
Fruitport, meanwhile, chose not to make the trip to Fremont to face the Packers in boys and girls basketball action. In fact, athletic director Ken Erny announced the district was completely shutting down so those varsity teams that wanted to practice on the snow day had to be completed by 3 p.m.
Today’s six-game schedule at Western Michigan Christian High School is expected to be played despite the weather.
The day begins with freshmen girls action, followed by freshmen boys, junior varsity girls, junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
The varsity girls’ game is expected to tip off at 5 p.m., with the varsity boys to follow at 6:45.
Also today, Grand Haven’s bowling team is scheduled to play at Zeeland East at 9 a.m. while the Bucs’ hockey squad is at West Ottawa at 3 p.m. The Buccaneers’ boys basketball team is also slated to play at Reeths-Puffer at 7 p.m.
Spring Lake’s wrestlers are expected to compete at the Shelby Invitational, while Fruitport’s wrestlers are at Jenison.
