The real Winter Classic

When the NHL held its latest Winter Classic hockey game at Michigan Stadium on Jan. 1, the goal was to set a new record for the number of fans ever to watch a hockey game.

A group of local pond hockey players have a much simpler goal for their Winter Classic — to have a good time while skating with their friends.

Up to a dozen area guys have established a tradition that, on every Super Bowl Sunday, they get together at the outdoor ice rink at Mulligan’s Hollow and play their version of the Winter Classic.

“This is probably our fourth year in a row, and we call it our Grand Haven Winter Classic,” said Beau Braymer. “Then we go over to a buddy’s house for a Super Bowl party.”

The game pairs the Grand Haven Gringos against the Whalers. The Gringos are a group of long-time friends who first met through their mutual love of surfing.

“We’d all go to Costa Rica together in February, when we’re all pasty white, and we nicknamed ourselves the Grand Haven Gringos,” said Braymer, whose brother, Ben, also plays in the outdoor event. “Then we realized we all play hockey, too, thus the surfboard in one hand and the hockey stick in the other (on their jerseys).”

While Super Bowl Sunday is their Winter Classic, it’s not the only time the group gets together. They meet every Sunday at 3 p.m. for an informal game at Mulligan’s Hollow.

Holy Horshack! Is that a real 'fro on the dude on the right?!

Former Grandhavenite

I thought it was one of those Russian-style fur-lined hats at first, but upon closer examination I do believe a fro has been detected.
