Amid all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Senior Night for the Grand Haven varsity girls basketball team, someone forgot to tell Grandville that it’s customary for the home team to win such events.

The visiting Bulldogs came into Grand Haven Fieldhouse and stunned the host Buccaneers, 35-27, spoiling the Bucs’ celebration of its six seniors.

Grand Haven was ice-cold from the field throughout the contest, making just 2-of-16 3-pointers and shooting 29 percent from the floor while attempting just two free throws on the night.

Defensively, the Bucs gave up too many open looks, according to coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer.

“It was just one of those games where I didn’t feel like we came out with the intensity we needed defensively,” said Kowalczyk-Fulmer, whose team falls to 13-4 overall and 4-3 in O-K Red games. “In the first half, we gave up a lot of easy buckets. I thought we were very average defensively, and on offense, we really struggled.”
