Grant entered Friday’s girls basketball contest at Fruitport with just one win in 16 games, and the host Trojans came out determined not to let the Tigers add to that win total.
Fruitport led 35-10 at halftime and cruised to a 52-34 win over Grant, improving to 10-6 on the season.
Breanne Burns knocked down a 3-pointer and led the Trojans with 13 points, while Francesca Cerniglia added 11 points. Iyana Brown scored 10 for the Trojans.
Laura Bouwkamp led Grant with 13 points.
In the boys’ contest, the visiting Tigers more than doubled up the Trojans, winning 46-22.
Tayler Manlick had 14 points and Nick Brown added 13 for Grant.
Fruitport struggled terribly on offense, making just 7-of-44 shots from the field, including a woeful 0-of-19 from 3-point range.
Travis Grimm led Fruitport with eight points and Zack Garber scored four. The rest of the team combined for just 10 points.
WMC BOYS DOMINATE
Bernard Smith poured in 22 points to lead Western Michigan Christian’s boys basketball team to a commanding 77-35 win over Grand River Prep.
Jacob Ray scored 10 points, Derrick Holt nine and Kyle Kingma eight for the Warriors, who remain atop the River Valley Conference with a 6-1 league record.
In the girls’ contest, it was Grand River Prep that dominated, scoring a 46-18 win over WMC.
Lindsey Johnson led the Warriors with six points.
