With a pair of huge Lakes Eight Conference games coming up in the next few days, Spring Lake’s varsity girls basketball team could have easily overlooked Tuesday’s non-conference contest at Montague.
Instead, Spring Lake raced out to a 13-5 lead and kept their foot on the gas pedal all night in a 55-35 victory over the Wildcats.
Freshman point guard Reiko Johnson poured in 21 points for Spring Lake, which improved to 12-6 overall and received some good news after the game. The Lakers learned that Fruitport upset Tri-County, which gives Spring Lake a one-game lead in the Lakes Eight standings with two games to play.
“The girls were excited when they heard that,” said coach Rich Hyde, whose team has won eight straight games.
