Freewater Experience, a local organization that melds faith and the outdoors, is offering Your Best Year of Fishing in Grand Haven — a five-week fishing class, to be held later this spring.

The classes, geared primarily toward students in grades 5-12 and adults, will take place on Wednesday nights, March 5 through April 2, at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, 364 S. Lake Ave. in Spring Lake.

The class runs from 6:30-7:45 each night, and cost is $40 per person. Each additional family member is half off.

The topic of the opening class is Salmon and Steelhead — on the lake, from the piers and in the river. Next is River Monsters — right here in Grand Haven (catfish and gar). Bass, Pike and Panfish — from spring through fall. Fourth is Walleye and Whitefish — runs right under our noses; and lastly, dive into the insane fun of spring Sucker Spearing.

Much more will also be covered in the class, which will utilize plenty of videos and photos to aid in instruction.

To register and reserve a spot in the class, e-mail r_gabel@hotmail.com, or call 616-402-0564.

What a nice place for a for profit program. I teach kids to fish for free. $$$$$. Just saying...

The class is every bit worth the money...tons of information and lots of tackle give-aways. Over 50 people took the class last year, and feedback has been amazing. Like many non-profits (Salvation Army, Elks Club, Rotary Club, YMCA, Coast Guard Festival, etc.) Freewater Experience charges reasonable fee for some things to raise the funds that cover the cost of other free programs that they offer. At the end of last year, they had provided free hunting and fishing experiences for over 100 kids in the Grand Haven area...that's pretty awesome!
