Brown leads Trojans win district-openening win

Freshman pours in 25 points for Trojans

Freshman Iyana Brown poured in 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, helping Fruitport hold off Whitehall, 46-43, in the opening round of the Class B district tournament at Orchard View on Monday.

The game was close throughout, with the Trojans leading 27-24 at the half. Fruitport then used a big third quarter to pull away for a 38-28 lead going into the fourth.

The Trojans couldn’t stay out of foul trouble, however, and Whitehall made 12 trips to the free throw line in the final quarter, making 10 to keep the game close.

Francesca Cerniglia and Caitlin Hughey each scored eight points.

Janelle Vest and Hughey each grabbed seven rebounds, while Hughey had five steals and Cerniglia added five assists.

Emily MacArthur led Whitehall (10-10) with 14 points and Brandi Balzer scored 11.

The Trojans have a tough task ahead as they face Oakridge (18-2) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Orchard View.
