Grand Haven’s varsity hockey team won its district tournament opener on Tuesday, thanks to a big night in goal by Ryan Henning.

Henning stopped all 17 shots he faced to record the shutout as the Bucs knocked off Portage Central 4-0 at Lawson Ice Arena, on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Joey Zelenka jump-started the Grand Haven offense with an unassisted goal in the first period.

In the second, Trey Bledsoe scored, assisted by Matt Nalley and Hayden Modaff.

Patrick Modaff made it 3-0 early in the third, assisted by Zelenka and Justin VanderZwag.

Nathan Schmidt then closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal later in the third.

Grand Haven advances to Thursday’s district final against Forest Hills Northern/Eastern, a 5-4 winner over Portage Northern on Tuesday. Thursday’s showdown will take place on the Bucs’ home ice, The Edge Ice Arena in Holland.
