Juarez, Hendricks to wrestle for state title today

Grand Haven’s Dakota Juarez and Fruitport’s Chris Hendricks will wrestle for an individual state championship today.

Juarez won both of his Friday matches by pins. In the quarterfinal round, he pinned Sterling Heights Utica Ford’s Aaron Wells in 5 minutes, 5 seconds. The Bucs’ senior made much quicker work of Joey Shaver of Canton, pinning him in 1:29 in the semifinal round.

Juarez, now 42-0 on the season, will take on Jordan Atienza (63-1) of Livonia Franklin in today’s championship match.

Hendricks needed overtime to win his semifinal bout, scoring a 3-1 win over Dan Perry of Lapeer East. That win came after a quick pin of Warren-Lincoln’s Michael Abouya in the quarterfinal round.

Hendricks, now 46-1, will meet Preston Pelham (56-1) of Tecumseh in today’s championship bout.

Grand Haven heavyweight Chase VanHoef also reached the semifinals of his weight class. The Buccaneers’ senior scored a 5-1 win over Oxford’s Zach Wood to reach the seminfinals. There, he was tied 1-1 with East Lansing’s Brian Darios heading into the final few seconds. Darios scored a takedown for a 3-2 lead, then VanHoef got a point for an escape, but didn’t have enough time left to make up the deficit in a 3-2 loss.

VanHoef falls into the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
