Freshman Allison Richards swished two pressure-packed free throws with 10 seconds remaining as Fruitport Calvary Christian knocked off Muskegon Catholic Central, 63-60, to win the Class D district championship on Friday.
Calvary Christian led by nine points with six minutes to play, but center Sophia Zelenka fouled out of the game at that point, and Catholic Central made a furious rally.
The Crusaders tied the game at 60 with 19 seconds to play.
Allison Richards was fouled with 10 seconds to go, and according to coach Brad Richards, an MCC fan began running back and forth under the basket with a huge flag. The fan was removed from the game, but it took several minutes for order to be restored.
“The fan was ejected, but he wouldn’t leave,” Brad Richards said. “It was an incredible scene.”
The outstanding freshman was unflappable, sinking both free throws for a two-point lead.
