Four Spring Lake High School divers qualified for Tuesday’s Division 3 regional meet, with Sam Thornsen placing ninth and qualifying for this weekend’s state meet.

Thornsen, a senior, finished his 11-dive set with a score of 315.45 points.

Every diver completed five dives, then the field was cut to 20. After three more rounds, the field of competitors was trimmed to 16. Those remaining 16 divers finished the final three rounds, and the top 12 advanced to the state meet.

Fellow Lakers’ senior Anton Bredenbeck also dove extremely well and placed 16th with a score of 278.95.

Freshman Casey King just missed the first cut, finishing 21st, while Gavin DeVries topped off a strong season by finishing 27th.

“These guys did such a great job all season long,” coach Tom Knight said. “Sam came close to qualifying for state last year, but he came up a little short.

“Anton is an exchange student from Germany, and he has improved tremendously. This is just a great group of guys.”

The Division 3 state meet takes place Friday and Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center.
