It was close early, but that didn’t last long.
A bank shot by Orchard View’s Brandon Edwards put the Cardinals down 4-2 in the first quarter of Wednesday night’s Class B district contest against host Spring Lake.
The basket, however, proved to be the Cardinals’ only points of the first half in a 50-30 loss to host Spring Lake in the Class B district semifinals.
The Lakers advance to take on Coopersville in Friday’s district final at 7 p.m. A Spring Lake win would give the team its second district title in a row.
“We’re hosting the districts; we didn’t want anything to deter us from playing in the district championship at our gym,” said coach Bill Core. “When we got done I told them, ‘Congratulations, you are playing in the district finals. I’m not worried about your psyche, your mental approach or your emotion for Friday night’s game.’ … I think we’ll be ready to play on Friday, hopefully a little bit sharper.”
While the Lakers’ offense wasn’t as sharp as usual in the first half, its defense kept the Cardinals ice cold.
