Thornsen returned in time for the Costal Conference meet, and despite missing almost the entire season, he still challenged for a spot at the state meet, coming up just short at the regional event.

This winter, Thornsen wasn’t going to let anything get in his way.

The senior diver will join 10 Lakers’ swimmers at this weekend’s Division 3 state meet, which begins today with prelims at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The top 16 in each event after prelims move on to Saturday’s state semifinals and finals.

“Last year, I was out a lot of the season with a shattered eardrum,” Thornsen said. “I came back for conference and regionals, and I was still close, but I didn’t make it.

“This year it was really exciting (making the state cut).”

Heading into today’s action, Thornsen is ranked 13th in the field of divers, based on regional scores. He hopes to move up the board, with a goal of placing in the top 10. To do that, he’ll have to nail his early dives, as the field is trimmed down at various times throughout the competition.

“I have a lot of my easier dives right off the beat, then for the second cut, I really beef up my dives,” he said.

His favorites are the front 2 1/2, the inward 1 ½, and the front 1 ½.
