The Lakers’ varsity girls tennis team earned 11 points to place third out of four teams at Saturday’s season-opening Zeeland East Indoor Quad.
Grand Rapids Christian dominated the event, earning 24 points, while Zeeland East was second with 12 points. Greenville managed just one point to finish fourth.
The Lakers’ Meryn Campbell went 2-1 on the day, winning against Sarah VanWieren of Zeeland East (8-6) and Jacqueline Thomas of Greenville (8-0) before falling to GRC’s Abby Long (8-1).
Roxanne Strobel lost her opening match to GRC’s Leah Newhof at No. 2 singles (8-1) before winning against Maria Smallegan of Zeeland East (8-5). Strobel then lost her final match due to injury default.
Gretta Nyboer went 1-2 at No. 3 singles, with her lone win an 8-1 victory over Grace Phillips of Greenville.
At No. 4, Erika Kugler finished 0-2 before giving way to Francie Bailey, who beat Greenville’s Julia Hanson, 8-4.
In doubles play, the Lakers’ Faith Lee and Jori Henderson went 2-1, with wins over Zeeland East (8-3) and Greenville (8-0).
Brianne Shanahan and Abbie Mumby also finished 2-1, with wins over Greenville (8-0) and Zeeland East (8-6) at second doubles.
Spring Lake’s third doubles team of Suchleen Singh and Allison Dinneweth finished 1-2, with their line win an 8-0 blanking of Greenville.
Maddie Johnson and Megan Boomgard finished 1-2 at fourth doubles, beating Greenville, 8-0.
