The Lightning had 16 swimmers qualify in 66 events — quite a feat for a small team. The Lightning placed 21st overall with 150 total points earned at the event.
Kevin Losee, 12, of Spring Lake, and Kathryn Ackerman, 11, of Grand Haven, both put together fabulous meets.
Losee medaled in all six of his events. He placed fourth in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 50 butterfly; fifth in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 100 freestyle and the 200 butterfly, and eighth in the 200 freestyle. He turned in personal-best times in all of his events, including a fantastic effort of 59.60 seconds in the 100 butterfly finals, good for third place.
“This was absolutely the best meet of his career,” said coach Richard Riopelle.
Ackerman also had a tremendous meet, placing third in the 200 individual medley with a fantastic time of 2 minutes, 15.98 seconds. She was sixth in the 100 individual medley and the 100 backstroke; eighth in both the 50 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke; and 12th in the 100 freestyle.
“Kathryn also had personal-best times in all her medal events,” Riopelle said.
Jennifer Meulenbelt, 14, of Spring Lake qualified for the state meet in nearly every event in her age group and capped off a great season with her first USA Championship medal, placing eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 2:29.36.
