Softball, baseball teams suffer sweeps

Four different players scored goals as Western Michigan Christian scored a 4-1 soccer victory over Covenant Christian on Thursday.

Taylor Denison, Jessica Kinnucan, Alyssay Benedict and Alexys Riksen scored goals for the Warriors, who are now 2-0 on the year.

Lindsey Johnson saved three of the four shots she faced to earn the win in goal.

WMC BASEBALL DROPS TWO

The Warriors were swept by Covenant Christian on Thursday, losing 5-1 and 6-0.

In the opener, Matt VanderPloeg pitched 5 2/3 solid innings, allowing just one earned run.

Jared Varnado had the Warriors’ lone RBI. Three efforts led to four Covenant runs.

In the second game, WMC fell behind 6-0 in the opening inning and couldn’t recover. Logan Waller closed out the game pitching five scoreless innings. He added a double and a stolen base.

“We played great defense in spurts, just not the whole game,” said coach Chris VanHekken, whose team played six sophomores and a freshman.

SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR

WMC opened its season with a pair of losses to Covenent Christian, losing 15-0 and 16-2.

Haylee Moser recorded the Warriors’ lone hit in Game 1, while Ashley Sandin had the team’s only hit in Game 2.

Anna Sweetman and Carly Poel each scored runs after reaching on walks. Lorelle Hallenbeck and Ariana Brondyke each had an RBI.

“While it wasn’t the start we were hoping for, I did see signs of improvement over last year,” said coach Jeff Nestell.
