The Spring Lake girls track team has been on a tear this season, typically winning smaller meets by more than 30 points. But with warmer weather on Monday and no other meets scheduled until Friday, the Lakers took it to an even higher level.

Spring Lake easily defeated both of its Lakes Eight opponents in a double dual meet on Monday at Fruitport. The Lakers throttled the Trojans 102-26, and beat Orchard View 116-11.

“We haven’t been going all out for all the meets,” said Spring Lake standout Carlyn Arteaga. “At the smaller conference meets where it’s super duper cold, and you have another meet coming up, you don’t want to get hurt and endanger the big meet. We go to win, but aren’t pushing for (personal records).

“But today it finally warmed up, so they said ‘Go out and get it today.’ We don’t have another meet until Friday, which is the longest break that we’ve had since spring break, so everyone was really pushing it today.”

Arteaga was pushing it in completely new ways on Monday.
