Police said a 45-year-old southern Michigan man kidnapped and raped a Montana woman after promising to give her a bus ticket home.
Kelvin Hawkins was arraigned Thursday on charges including kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Battle Creek man was ordered held on $500,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted.
Hawkins has requested a court-appointed attorney.
Police said he met the 48-year-old woman Tuesday in the Detroit area and promised to drive her to Battle Creek, where he would give her a bus ticket to Billings, Mont.
