A 25-year-old Battle Creek man has been charged with murder in this summer's death of a 3-year-old girl who was in his care. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported police were looking for Leo Ackley. He's charged with open murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Baylee Stenman. Baylee died Aug. 1 at a hospital in Kalamazoo after being found unresponsive July 28. Charges were announced this week by Calhoun County prosecutors after autopsy results showed the child died from head trauma.

Police said a 45-year-old southern Michigan man kidnapped and raped a Montana woman after promising to give her a bus ticket home. Kelvin Hawkins was arraigned Thursday on charges including kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Battle Creek man was ordered held on $500,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted. Hawkins has requested a court-appointed attorney. Police said he met the 48-year-old woman Tuesday in the Detroit area and promised to drive her to Battle Creek, where he would give her a bus ticket to Billings, Mont.

Authorities said a breaking-and-entering suspect punched a Battle Creek police officer in the face early today and tried to grab the officer's gun before the officer shot him in the arm. Police reportedly responded to the break-in about 1 a.m., and the officer tried to arrest the man. Police said the man hit the officer, forced him to the ground and tried to take his gun. The officer was treated for injuries to his face and released. The suspect was hospitalized for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.

A woman who told police she's highly allergic to peanuts wants assault charges against her husband's ex-wife for sending him a letter smeared with peanut butter. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported the woman told police she believed the peanut butter on a bill was an attempt to harm her. The case is being reviewed by authorities. The Battle Creek woman told police said she came home during her lunch break Friday and found an envelope in the mailbox addressed to her husband with oil soaking through.
