Grand Haven’s varsity girls basketball team used a dominating defensive effort to overcome a poor shooting night in a 42-24 win at Hudsonville.

The Buccaneers held the Eagles to just eight points at the half as they improved to 17-1 overall and 11-1 in O-K Red Conference play.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” said Bucs’ coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer. “We didn’t hit any outside shots. The game before, we had eight 3’s. But we only gave up 24 points.

“I told the girls after the game, we did a lot of good things tonight. It just wasn’t pretty.”

The Bucs’ best offensive weapon was junior center Abby Cole, who went 7-of-12 from the floor and scored a game-high 15 points. Alex Law and Megan Newhouse each had six points for the Bucs while Shar’Rae Davis dished out five assists and swiped five steals.
