For the first time, Grand Haven's varsity wrestling team has won a regional championship.

Wednesday's 34-29 win over Caledonia in the regional finals wasn't without drama.

The Buccaneers trailed 26-9 before staging a furious comeback. Dakota Smith scored a key win at 189 pound, registering an escape in the closing seconds to win by a point.

After a Caledonia win at 215 pounds, the Bucs' Ian Radde recorded a pin at heavyweight, then freshman 103-pounder Camden Bertucci ended the match win a pin, giving the Bucs a come-from-behind victory.

Grand Haven moves on to the Division 1 state quarterfinals, which will take place on Feb. 24 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
