Police said a 14-month-old child has died after she and her mother were struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing a suburban Detroit road.

Southfield police said the 20-year-old Detroit woman was pushing the girl in a stroller Monday night at a crosswalk when they were hit by the SUV driven by a 29-year-old Livonia man.

The mother and child were taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Police said the child was pronounced dead early today, and the mother was in stable condition with head injuries and a fractured femur.

The driver was interviewed by police and released pending further investigation.

Police said traffic lights and the crosswalk signals were working properly, and they were trying to determine who had the right of way.
