SL/Ferrysburg Police report: Car crashes drop, crime rates low

The number of accidents in Spring Lake and Ferrysburg dropped significantly, and crime rates remain low in the last year, according to the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department’s annual report.
“The accidents stand out the most,” Police Roger DeYoung said. “The year prior, they were doing work on Exchange and Jackson streets. I think more people drove on Savidge instead of buzzing down Exchange, and I think that caused more congestion and accidents. They got sick of waiting, and pulled out in front of people and took more chances.”
In 2010, there were 201 accidents in Spring Lake and 143 in Ferrysburg. Last year, that number dropped 37 percent — to 113 and 104, respectively.
There were no murders, rapes or negligent manslaughter cases in either locale, according to DeYoung. There was one armed robbery at the Reef Party Store in Ferrysburg in late summer, and 54 larceny cases and 20 burglaries in the communities combined.
“We didn’t have any serious crimes, which was a good year,” DeYoung said. “Our solvability remains good — 87 percent.”
