Underground Railroad in Michigan to be discussed

In recognition to Black History Month, Grand Valley State University’s Dr. Veta Tucker will present “Journeys to Freedom in Michigan” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in Loutit District Library’s Program Room A.

Tucker’s program is an overview of Michigan’s role as a Midwest hub of the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery movement — with a particular emphasis on sites, rescuers and freedom-seekers in West Michigan. This program is free and open to the public.

Tucker is an associate professor of English and African-American studies; and teaches African-American literature, African-American studies and American literature at GVSU. Her research activities include extensive study of several lesser-known slave women who transgressed the social station dictated for them by 19th-century social norms, seized their freedom, and made significant contributions to American life.
