70°Village to hire Mich. Municipal League for manager search

Village Council has decided to seek the help of the Michigan Municipal League in its search for a new village manager.
Village Manager Ryan Cotton is expected to leave next month to become the city manager in Holland. He will likely formalize a contract later this week with Holland officials, then submit an official resignation letter to Spring Lake Village Council.
The village’s management search committee — consisting of Village President Jim MacLachlan and councilmen Mark Miller and Marv VandenBosch — recommended that council hire the MML to help find a replacement for Cotton, who has served as village manager since 2002. Council voted unanimously Monday night to follow the recommendation.
The Spring Lake Township Board enlisted the MML in its search for a township manager, which ended with the hiring of Gordon Gallagher in 2007.
According to MML literature, a typical search takes anywhere from nine to 12 weeks. Fees are usually 10 percent of the manager’s annual salary; plus another $1,000 or more for advertising, background checks and travel expenses.

Kudos to Marv, Mark, and Jim. Engaging the MML for the search appears to be the most effective and lowest cost approach. Village Council and Village employees do not possess the necessary expertise to conduct the search on their own. Just look at the snafu their last search produced.10:11 PM

Is the village board to busy to conduct this search. With half of the store fronts empty could we not use 10% of the managers salary and the $1,000 plus in advertising towards some marketing to fill those store fronts. I guess it's the easy way to pass the buck in case the the new manager doesn't work out.05:49 PM

I have heard it said many times that the municipalities in this area have very different characters, and I want to keep it that way! Big government is unresponsive government. By the way, the Municipal League is the last place I would go for advise. It advertises itself as a resource for local governmental units, but is actually a lobbying organization - and one that is not on the side of small, responsive government. SL should look to its staff, elected officials, and people for advise re: hiring a manager.03:25 PM

With the opening caused by Cotton leaving Spring Lake Village, maybe it is time once again to consider merging the excessive amount government. SL Township,SL Village and Ferrysburg just creates duplication costs for all of taxpayers. There is just too much power brokering taking place which costs money. Voting can continue to be based on SL Village, Ferrysburg and SL Township. Time to test the waters.
